The Role
We are seeking an experienced Library Assistant / Book Attendant to support daily library activities, assist visitors and students, maintain book collections, process loans and returns, and ensure library resources remain organized and accessible.The ideal candidate is friendly, detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable assisting users in a quiet, professional learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist students, visitors, teachers, and library users with general inquiries and resource requests.
- Support daily library operations, including book circulation, returns, reservations, and renewals.
- Check books and other materials in and out accurately using the library-management system.
- Maintain organized shelves and ensure books are returned to their correct locations.
- Sort, label, classify, shelve, and arrange books, journals, educational materials, and other resources.
- Assist users in locating books, reference materials, study resources, and digital information.
- Maintain accurate records of borrowed, returned, reserved, missing, damaged, and overdue materials.
- Monitor overdue items and communicate reminders to users according to library procedures.
- Process new books and materials by recording, labeling, cataloging, and preparing them for circulation.
- Assist with inventory checks and periodic audits of library collections.
- Identify damaged, missing, outdated, or incorrectly cataloged materials and report them appropriately.
- Maintain a clean, quiet, organized, and welcoming library environment.
- Assist with basic shelving, collection maintenance, reading-area organization, and study-space management.
- Support students and users with basic access to computers, printers, scanners, databases, and digital-library resources where applicable.
- Help users understand library rules, borrowing procedures, computer-use policies, and available services.
- Assist librarians with research requests and basic information searches when appropriate.
- Prepare library notices, labels, circulation reports, inventory lists, and administrative records.
- Support library events, reading programs, workshops, exhibitions, book fairs, and educational activities.
- Assist teachers and academic staff with locating classroom resources and educational materials.
- Maintain confidentiality of user records, borrowing information, personal details, and institutional information.
- Report safety issues, damaged facilities, lost materials, or unusual incidents to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with reorganizing collections, moving resources, and preparing library areas for special activities.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional-development activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve circulation procedures, collection organization, and user experience.
- Follow library policies, information-management procedures, health and safety requirements, privacy standards, and organizational guidelines.
- Bachelorβs degree or equivalent qualification in Library Science, Information Management, Education, Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- 3+ years of professional experience in library services, education administration, information management, customer service, or administrative support is preferred.
- Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.
- Friendly, patient, helpful, and professional approach when assisting library users.
- Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established cataloging and circulation procedures.
- Basic understanding of library classification, shelving systems, circulation processes, and collection management.
- Comfortable using computers, Microsoft Office, email, databases, and library-management systems.
- Experience with integrated library systems or digital-library platforms is advantageous.
- Strong data-entry, filing, record-keeping, and administrative skills.
- Ability to work independently while cooperating effectively with librarians, teachers, administrators, and other staff.
- Previous experience in a school, university, public library, research center, or educational organization is advantageous.
- Knowledge of digital resources, e-books, online databases, and information-search techniques is advantageous.
- UAE education, library, or academic-support experience is advantageous.
- Library Science, information-management, customer-service, or related certifications are advantageous but not required.
